CHRISTCHURCH SEWERAGE.

A RICHMOND AND LINWOOD EXTENSION.

Tho Christchurch Drainage Board is calling just now for tenders for what is technically called "No. 23 Pipe-Lay-ing Contract," which is to consist of 9-inch and 6-inch sowers in East Richmond and Linwood, a 9-inch cast iron siphon under the River Avon and puniphoase and tank and so forth. This contract covers an interesting stage in the development of the Christchurch eewerage system. At the present moment, under tho Christchurch Drainage Board, there are one hundred and eleven miles in sewers proper, eighteen miles and forty-two chains of storm-water sewers, and a mile and thirty-five chains of duplex sewer, an old Richmond sewer constructed for the carrying away of storm water and household drainage at. the same time, land there are over twelve thousand houses with fifteen thousand conI veaiencea connected with' the ! sewers. The new contract will add three and' a-half miles of sewerage to the one \ hundred and eleven miles already constructed, and in about four months' time, when it is guaranteed that the contract will bo completed, East Richmond and Linwood will bo completely sewered within the loan area. In order to do this the sewerage will* be carried by siphon under the river at the end of Linwood Avenue, aud carried back across the river again to the main pumping station by another siphon at Fitzgerald avenue. The _ew_r_ge will thus have gone under the river twice This is done to obviate the necessity and heavy cost of two new electric pumping stations. . Under the present proposo. there will be one new electric pumping station on the river side at the end of Avon Glade, lifting sewerage into gravitation sewer of Draper street, Richmond, the power for which will be supplied f ro m the Tramway Board s plant. The new pipe house and station, -.ben completed, will enable a large tra mbcv of and residences to obtain the aSeS ° f '** '-■P-tc-dat. sanitation
