CATTLE FOR SOUTHLAND.
(bpeciai, to "_me r-i__s.") INVERCARGILL, November 30. Mr A. W. Rogers, jun., of Birchwood, ono of Southland- most enterprising sottlers, has incurred considerable expense in importing from the Old Country a number of cattle and sheep with a view to improving his flocks and herds, a commendable undertaking wliich could to advantage be followed by others. Southland is becoming more and more a dairying district, and the best results can only be obtained by tho use of care in the selection of animals depended upon, to procure which considerable initial cost is entailed. The cattle and sheep referred to arrived at Lyttelton by the s.s. Opawa about six weeks ago, and after being in quarantine the regulation period, were brought to Invorcargill, reaching this town by Friday night's_ express. They consist of threo cows in mill-:, four heifers, and a bull, all Ayrshires, from the best milking strains in Scotland, and two Romney rams purchased in Kent. A number of farmers to-day took advantage of the opportunity afforded by Mr Rogers to see. the animals.
