SMALL BOARDS PERMITTED

- .--■ (SFECIAT. TO "THE VBESS.") WELLINGTON, November 28. The Fire Brigades Act Amendment Bill, introduced in -the Legislative Council, empowers town boards of 1000 people to become fire districts. At present the district must carry 2000 people. The estimates of boards may for the future provide means of recreation for brigade members and for the payment of expenses of brigade members attending demonstrations or conferences of the United Fire Brigades Association, and also for the payment of the expenses of board members attending fire board conferences. A new clause provides that "every, broker, agent, or other person who negotiates any contract, insuring against fire any property in New Zealand on behalf of any insurance company not carrying on business in Now Zealand, is for the purpose of this section himself deemed to be an insurance company." An amendment is made providing that the four principal cities may borrow up to £20,000 instead of £10,000 as «,t present.
