INDEPENDENT CRITICISM
MR ISITT STRIKES A KEY NOTE. The discussion upon both sides was wholly without dignity, and to Sir Isitt belongs the credit of summiug tip in a few words the correct value of the whole thing. "I don't believe," he said, "that Ministers upon one side or the other have plundered the people. This discussion is simply one result ~ of the wretched party system. There is not a man here who in his heart of hearts believes that any Minister, on one side or fhe_ other, has taken advantage of his, duties,to plunder the people of the Dominion. I deprecate altogether the effort to makeparty capital out of this, and I have been wondering what the people -would say if they could listen to men throwing out these in-r simiations. The whole debate is to be deplored by any man who has any regard for the political renutation of his colleagues or of any member of the House." A few minutes after this declaration the House dropped the subject.
