THE SISTINE MADONNA.
BERLIN, November 26. A sensation has been caused by several experts declaring that the famous "Sietine Madonna" in the Dresden Gallery is only a copy of Raphael's original picture.
A well-known authority says:—"The j, tost and grandest of all ot hia Madonnas, (if the consummation and perfection of all - such efforts, is the 'Sistino Madonna' (Dresden Gallery). Painted as an altar piece for the Cnurch of San Sistb, at Piacenza, it was finished just before Raphael's death. The Virgin is not represented as a mother, but as the all- . powerful Queen of Heaven descending from the clouds, which are themselves composed of the heads of thousands of cherubs. The Christ-child looks -with
thoughtful eves, as if conscious of his j destiny as a Saviour of the world, while on either side Saint Sixtus and Saint Catherine kneel in adoration. At the base of the picture are the two cele.brated cherubs."
