AT SUMNER.

A strike picket of four visited Sumner yesterday morning, endeavouring to stop'carters working. They stuck up a baker's cart and visited several carriers. A number ceased work, but several refused to stop. The picket tried to induce non-unioniste driven* to knock off. The pickets returned to town ehortly before noon, with, the avowed intention of returning with more men to force those to cease work who refused. Protection was telephoned for, and Constable Hampton arrived by motor-car, with a few special constables. The constable met a strike picket on a baker's premises, and threatened to arrest him if he did not get off the premises. The men then mounted their bicycles and rode away. It is generally considered that there ought to be a few "specials" stationed in Sumner, otherwise the strike pickets may get control. Constable Hampton is advising all those men who have ceased work to return if they think fit. . •
