SERIOUS STRIKE RIOT.
POLICE COMPELLED TO FIRE.
(Reerived November 26th, 9.50 p.m.) DURBAN, November 26. The acting editor of an Indian vernacular journal was arrested for harbouring indentured immigrants on a fnrm owned by the newspaper at Phoenix. Thp Natal Indian Association alleges that a number of Indians wero threatened with a beating unless they resumed work. They fled to Phrenix for protection. The Nntal Labour Federation has passed a. resolution calling on the Government to repatriate and adequately compensate the Indians, whose presence is inimical to the white workers. Sugar cane was fired on an estate at Ispingo, but natives extinguished the fire. When the police proceeded to "Hawkswqrth to collect Indians' caneknives, tho Indians refused to surrender them, and attacked the police with knives, sticks, and stones. Two native police and one European were wounded. The police were passive for an hour under a fusilade of missiles. They fired an overhead volley without effect. A second volley was fired at the strikers' feet. A third was fired in earnest. Two Indians were killed, including: the ringleader, and two fatally, and ten slightly wounded.
