EDUCATION BOARD.
i YESTERDAY'S MEETING
The North Cnntorbury Education Board , met yesterday, when there were present:—Messrs T. W. Adams (in the chair), C. H. A. T. Opie, Geo. Itennic, J. J.amieson t W. H. Collins, H. Boyd, and E. H. Andrews. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. The Buildings Committee reported that advice had been received from the Department, intimating that the Board's applications for grants for the purcase of Additional sites, BeckenhamIfieherton, and Cashmere, had "been approved. The secretary was inetru' , * ed to inform Mr Butler and the trust. \* of tho'Cashmere Estate of the Board's acceptance of tho offers made. A- report, -was received . from Mr Adams and Mr Rennie, to the effect that after visiting, the district they considered there was ■ sufficient settlement in the Haldon locality, to warrant the erection of a school, the number of children of school age being already-20, and there being 24 settlers in the district. It was agreed to raako application for grant for erection of' School. ."■.•■' The report was adopted. ■' . APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE _ The Appointments Committee reported that the following resignations Jiad beon receiyed and accepted:—Elmwood, Mrs A. jGvWilliamson, mistress; Ethelton, 31iss A. C. MacdonaM, mistross; Kaiapoi, Miss E. ' K. Barnard, pupil teacher. A. letter was received from the Chief Inspector suggesting that the Board should approach tho Department and ask to be allowed some discretion in the matter of the substitution of assistants for pupil teachers. , Tho report was adopted. . NORMAL SCHOOL AND TECH- • •: NICAL COMMITTEE. _The Normal School and Technical Committee, in their report, stated that the Director reported that cue or-the domestic • scienco instructors would like an exchange for a year with an instructor in a similar American or Canadian school, the teacher's wish being to enlarge her experience and increase her qualifications. It was agreed to approve of tho principle of exchange, provided the Board Was not put to any expense, and that suitable arrangements could be made by the Director for carrying on the wprk during any interval that might occur before the American or Canadian teacher could commence work. The report was adopted. SUMMER VACATION. Tho Headmasters' Association wrote recommending, the Board to approve of city and suburbnn. schools" continuing open until the 23rd December, instead of closing oa the 18th, so as to give the teachers and others an opportunity to f visit the Auckland Exhibition. Tho Board agreed to tho request. INCIDENTAL ALLOWANCES. A deputation from the School Committees , Association waited on the Board relative to incidental allowances and caretakers' salaries. Mr W. Large said the committees fount! it impossible to carry on their work with the incidentals allowed. After the caretakers had been paid a living wage, there was really nothing left for anything else. . ' Several other members of the deputation spoke, urging the Board to approach the Government with a. request that tho incidental allowance should be increased. The Chairman said that if tho Board could get any more from' the Government they .would share it, with the committees. Last year, however, the Board had paid to tho committees ■£467 more than it was obliged. The Board decided to refer the ; matter to the Buildings Committee for enquiry and report. ■.'■••• . LIKWOOD NORTH. Mr W. H. Denton applied for an ex-
tension of the North Liriwood School buildings. • He quoted figures to show that the school at present was badly overcrowded. The matter was referred to the Buildings Committee. ■
