■CRICKET, ■ _ * —. OTAGO UNIVERSITY v. CANTERBURY COLLEGE. The annual inter-Varsity match Qtago University v. Canterbury College was concluded at Hagley Park yesterdayj when Otago won, after an exciting finish, by four wickets. Canterbury's first innings closed for 182, and, following on, they made 160. Requiring 53 to win, Otago started well, but Smith performed the "hat trick," and six wickets were down with still six runs to get. BOYS» HIGH SCHOOL v. CHRIST'S COLLEGE. The annual secondary schools' match Boys' High School v. Christ's College was commenced at Hagley Park yesterday before a fair crowd of spectators. As tho Boys' High School won the Heathcote Williams Shield back from Auckland Grammar School last season, the match is also a challengo game for that trophy. School won the toss and elected to bat, but although they occupied the wicket all the afternoon they could only notch 158 runs. The match will bo continued this .afternoon at 1.45. THE AUSTRALIAN TOUR. The secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council has received a telegram stating that the Wellington p!ayer, l>. C. Collins, is seriously ill, and will not be able to accompany the New Zealand team to Australia. The first emergency, R. Somerville, the brilliant young Auckland .player, has been appointed to fill the vacancy. The position at the present time is a very serious one for the New Zealand Cricket Council, there being no certainty that the team -will be able to make the tour as arranged, owing to the dislocation of the steamer service. COUNTY COUNCILS. ♦—! SPRINGS. ■ At the annual meeting of the Springs County Council, held at bpringston yesterday, the following members were present:—Crs. il. F. Ryan (chairman), J. W. Kime, I. Andrew, R. W. Lochhead, J. Flceto, and C. Wolfe. Cr. Ryan was re-elected chairman, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his' services as chairman during the past year.'. It was decided to hold the monthly meetings on the last Tuesday in tho month. After the. annual-meet-ing a special meeting was held, at which by-laws were adopted prohibit- ! ing the public from cutting grass seed j on the public roads of the county without authority. ' Andrew and Fleete were appointed a Horse Committee. ASHBURTON. The jmnual meeting of the Ashburton County Council was held yesterday. Present: —Messrs C. J. Harper • (chairman), J. Cairns, H. J. Harrison, IG. Murdoch, and W. Morgan. The I Chairman gave a resume of the work carried out during the past year, and i thanked the members, who * had extended courteous attention to the chair. On the motion of Crs. Harrison and Morgan, Mr Harper was unanimously re-elected chairman. Several members erpoke of the good work Mr Harper had ' done daring his long term of office.
