JOTTINGS FOR FARMERS.
A fungus that chokes Californian thistle has made its appearance in the Totara district and elsewhere (says the "Oamaru Mail"). It attacks the underside of the leaf in the form of a brown and. multiplies rapidly until the whole plant is covered. The leaves then turn yellow and the thistle (withers. Investigations among crops and pastures of all kinds in which the Californian thistle is found, show that it attacks no other form of vegetation, not.even closely allied thistles. "Search has.'Beoii made in'wheat, bate, ; .rye', and pasture fields in which' the Californian .pest is plentiful but none of the crops were tainted with the fungus. The fungus may only bo a product of lush seasons such as the present, but if it can be> proved to be inimical to Californian thistles only, it will be worthy of cultivation. A specimen has been sent to the Agricultural Department at Wellington.
