WORK AT THE WHARVES.
(SPECIAL TO "THE TRESS.")" DUNEDIN, November 2">. The arbitrationists were eplit into three gangs this morning, one assisting to work the Northern, another the Kotare, and the third operating two hatches at the Taviuni. As for the Northern, ten arbitra-tion-ists are working with the crew, and a fair day's work was done, amongst the stuff lifted and ready for carting by noon being 109S cases of petrol. The work should bo completed by Thursday, and the Northern will at once proceed to Port Chalmers, giving way probably to one or other of the Home" boats, the Turakina or the Dorset, which are due about Friday. Four new "workers doffed their coats this morning, and there are nearly a dozen fresh applications for labour. Even this accretion, however, will not giv«> a total of more than sixty men, who, of course, would not be sufficient to clear the congestion when the committee commence (as they have announced their intention of doing) to reduce the port to normal conditions. The recruits to the ranks of the arbitrationists are none of the waterside workers', and, as a matter of fact, only eii;ht of tho experienced lumpers aro distributed anyone the strike-breakers. Meantime, the force of the mounted "spociiiLs"' held in reserve as a nucleus to quell any riot, has boen recruited by about sixty men. somp of whom are relieving the men who came to town at a minute's notice, and have had to return temporarily to look after their private concerns.. A movement is on foot at Port Chalmers to form an Arbitration Union, and several watersiders have boon approachnd. The prospects of forming Mich n union, however, ore not quite so promising ns was anticipated.
