Tho sick men were placed on a rock in tho rapids, and swept away when tho river roso. The Brazilian authorities opened an enquiry, but influenco procured a cessation of the investigation. Mr Woodroofo saw a boy flogged so severely that an eye was torn out. The Peruvian and Bolivian Governments are more directly responsible. Brazil is tho only State seriously attempting to protect the natives. Young children and girls aro sold into slavery.
