BOROUGH COUNCILS.
RICCARTON. : The Riccarton Borough Council met last evening. Present—The .Mayor (Mr J. Reynolds - )^ ■ ancL Crs. W. Hclliwell, T. Waddell, J Dempster, F. George, G. D. White; T. J.- Stokes, E.*J. Foster, and' A. D. Ford. The financial statement showed a credit balance on the district fund account of £421 3s Id, and on tho Np. 9 loan account of £432 l&s Bd. The report of the Works Committee, recommending the purchase of a horse aud harness, a water-cart and an extra dray, was referred to the Finance Committee 'for further • consideration. It was decided to purchase a mower. The report of the Special Committee set up to go into the question of drainage rates was adopted. On the motion of Cr. Stokes, a motion of sympathy with the'relatives of. the late Mr G. Luurcnson- was 'carried,members standing. ASHBURTON. - The fortnightly meeting of tho Aahj burton Borough Council was held on Monday night. The Mayor reported that the total debit balance stood at £6339 I6sßd. The Engineer applied for an increase of salary.-T-ne matter was referred to the Fire Brigade Committee to report. Mr F. Makcig was reappointed borough valuator at. a salary of £30.per anrinmi The vouncil agreed to pay the' Municipal and Temperance Brass* Bands £16 each to give eißut open-air concerts during the t coming season. Jt was decided to call for tenders for laying pipes to connect reeidents on the North-west Belt with the high pressure water supply. The nse of the Itomain was granted the Timara Friendly Societies to hold a picnic in January.
