CONTROL ANT> MAINTENANCE

A conference of : representatives of local .bodies was held yralerday to consider the question of the control, maintenance, aod. lightin;; of the Parkroads. There were present -the following delegates:—lLiceartoii, the Major (Mr J Reynolds) and Crs. Helliwell and Waddell : Paparoa, Messrs Can- and Macginness (dork); Wnimairi Council, Messrs i>. A. Staples (chairman) and Bullock; City Council, Messrs H. J. Otley and A. l>. Dubsou (engineer). I Mr Staples presided. j Mr Otley said the whole of the road on th« Addington side of the Park to the Carltou bridge belonged to Riccarton. us the Lincoln road and Park terrace belonged to the city. Manning's corner to the Garlton bridge was already controlled by tho city. j Mr Otley replied that did not mean tho Council was to continue to pay for itMr Waddell seconded Mr Otley's proposal. The Chairman said that four of the delegates present were not authorised to bind their Councils. At the suggestion of the Chairman, Mr Otley made his motion in the form of a recommendation. Mr Remolds said that Hiccarton was prepared to take over the West Belt road. Mr Otley's motion was carried. Regarding the road through the Park from the Hospital corner to the Riccarton Hotel, and the Park road from Fendalton to Carlton Hotel, Mr Reynolds moved that a, toll should be taken of tho traffic passing over the two road*, the cost to be allocated to where the traffic came from. Mr Otley said the toll would havo to be taken twice, once in the summer and once in the winter. • The Chairman said that the tolls should bo taken when trade conditions were normal. The motion was adopted, and it was decided to take three weekly tallies in December. March, and June. It was agreed that the City Council should take charge of the roads in the meantime, the other bodies ft> pay their share of the cost according to the traffic data so obtained by the tallies. It was also resolved that the City Engineer and 3lr Sbarpo should make an estimate of the cost of maintaining the middle Park road for tho next eicht months.
