NKW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP CONjQRESS.

Entries for the New Zealand Cheei Championship Congress contest, which close onr the 12tb. proximo, arc already coming to hand (says the Wellington "Post"). Those rocoivod during tho past week are O. F. Dodds (champion of Nelson), 3. B. Dunlop (ch&Apion- of Oamoru), and R. J. Barnes (who has been champion of the local Working lien's Club for "twenty-five, years, and haa five times held tho New Zealand cliampionship). Mr Dodd§ wae tho Otago champion in 1908, and won the brilliancy prias of the congress held in Dunedin at tho end of that year. Mr Dunlop, whose knowledge of openings and endings \a a Very extensive one, was the Otago champion in 190 D. He took a prize on the only occasion that he competed for tho New Zealand -championship, vir.., at Tima.ru three years ago. It is understood that amongst" tho other competitors -will be Hicke (Napier), Blake Mason (Hastings), L. A. Jourdain (Patoka). Pleosants (Wanganui). W. Moore (Carterton), W. E. Mason, and James (Wellington), T. Mara (Timaru), E. 11. Sevorne (Christchnrch), Gylos, jun. (Weetport), Hoy. Fox (Solomon Islands), and four from Auckland, say, Grierson (present champion), Daviea (twice champion), Mile*, and Freeman. With ft formidable entry list like this the pace should bo pretty hot. It is hoped that Australia -will contribute her champion, Mr W. S. Viner, who, it will be remembered, vcon the first prizo at our previous "Exhibition Congress," vii., at Christchurch seven years ago. Mr Viner w anxious to attend, and will do so-if he can make the necessary arrangements. Hie last letter to the official reporter of the New Zealand Chess Association indicated that there was a good chance of his being ahlo to make .the trip. His final answer should be available at an early date. .
