ANNUAL REPORT.
Tlie annual report of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury, to be presented at the annual general meeting on December 3rd, states that during the past year eleven Council meetings were held, and nine meetings of the Institute, addresses being given by Dr. L. Cockayne, Miss Mary Proctor, -Mr R. Speight, Mr R. L. Gray, and the Rev. J. Holloway. Two special meetings were held on the occasion of Miss Proctor's visit. The membership roll stands at 178, an increase of three on last year. Representations were made at the instance of the Otago Institute to the Minister of Marine, protesting against the removal of the protection of fur seal. Numerous additions were made to the library, the Antarctic section, in particular, being augmented by several valuable works. The Council records with regret the death of Mr A. Hamilton, Director of the Dominion Museum, and a Past President of the New Zealand Institute, and also of Alfred Russel "Wallace. the great naturalist, who -was an honorary member of the Now Zealand Institute. Attention is drawn to the meeting of tlie British Association, to be held in Australia in 1914, which it is anticipated will prove a stimulus to local scientific work. The balance-sheet shows receipts £179 Bs, and expenditure £354 8s 7d.
