THE LATE MR LAURENSON.

CITY COUNCIL'S TRIBUTE. At the meeting of the City Council last night the Mayor referred to the death of the late Mr Goo. Laurenson, M.P., and said that a man of the experience and ability of Mr Laurenson was much needed at the present time. Mr Laurenson had given his life to public matters, and died in harness. Ho would move:—"That this Council desires to tender to Mrs Laurenson and family its sincere sympathy in their sad bereavement," " - The motion was spoken to by Cr Cooper, and carried in silence.

Before proceeding with the business of the evening, tho Mayor of Lyttelton, Mr J. R. Wobb, at last night's meeting of the Borough Council made feeling reference to the death of the late Mr G. Laurenson, who for some years occupied a seat on the Council. He was sure that, no matter how much one differed from Mr Laurenson politically, one felt that tho late gentleman was one who could ill be spared. Ho was a man who had the good of tho community at heart, and his loss would be"felt not only in Lyttelton, but also in Parliament. The Mayor trusted that Mr Laurenson's place in the House would be filled by a man as good and capable a© the deceased gentleman had been He would move that a letter of condolence be sent from the Council to the bereaved relatives. Mr M.J. Miller seconded the motion, which was also spoken to by Crs. Radcliffe, Page, and Schumacher. The motion was carried in silence, and the meeting adjourned for ten minutes. At a meeting of the YL-iian Railway League on Saturday evening, a resolution of sympathy with the widow of tho lato Mr'Georgo Laurenson, M.P., was carried, -on tno motion of the President (Mf Pettigrew), and the secretary was instructed to writfe to Mrs Laurensorr expressing the League s deep sense of the community's loss.
