ASHBURTON ITEMS.
" Tho Ashburton Dairy Company have from time to time had to get supplies of butter boxes from Timaru, while many have been made locally owing to the strike preventing mem arriving from Wanganui. The supplies were just run out, but on. Saturday a consignment came to hand from Wanganui, which will last a month. Another consignment is expected to-day, wmle a large number which have been lying at Wellington since the strike commenced •have been shipped by the Pateena. All the Ashburton storekeepers are anxiously awaiting for a shipment of sugar to arrive. Dried fruits and other commodities are running short.. It is, however, ' expected that supplies will bo available early vhis week via Timaru. There is no immediate danger of the coal supply running out, some consignments having been obtained from Timaru. A local merchant estimates fcho local stock of coal to last two months. . "
Owing to not being able to have its butter shipped the Ashburton Dairy Company has postponed the payment of supplies for a week. It is expected that the butter will be shipped early this week. . ,
A representative meeting of business people and farmers of the Ashburton County was held in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's room on Saturday afternoon. Press representatives were not admitted, but information has been supplied to the efFect that after various speakers had addressed those present, a motion was unanimously carried endorsing the action already taken, and those present at the meeting pledged themselves to enrol as special constables, and to assist in other ways in maintaining tho industrial progress of the province..
