THE SEAMEN AND FIREMEN.
A SIGNIFICANT STATEMENT. Speaking to a representative of "The Press" on Saturday night, a well-known shipmaster said that one of his seamen had informed him that telegraphed instructions had been received fromt Wellington by the seamen and firemen ashore.at Lyttelton, that they were not
to accept employment in any steamers. Tho majority of the men "on the beach" were paid off when the companies decided to lay-up their steamers, ■while the others left their vessels in a legal manner after giving 24 hours' notice. U the men have been instructed by union officials not to accept employment, it would appear that a strike o£ !. seamen and firemen has been decided > upon. It is stated on excellent authority, however, that a large propor;.tion or the men who have been ashore ■; for three or four weeks are not very *««, oS financially, and would welcome return to tfie sea.
