SWEARING IN "SPECIALS."

At 9.30 a.m. and at noon yesterday persons desiring to act as special constables were sworn in by Mr H. W. Bishop, SJM. At the first . swearing in about ono hundred took the oath, and at the noon ceremony nearly another hundred were added. Amongst thorn were prominent members of the legal profession.

It was explained to the special constables that it was not necessary for all to go into camp, but that it was essential that they should report themselves to the O.C. of \ the camp, in order to receive from him special confidential instructions, and badges and. batons.TERRITORIAL WAGGONS HELD UP. Four Permanent Artillerymen, in charge of two waggons carrying equipment and forage for the "B" Squadron camp at Tai Tapu, where held up by strike pickets in St. Asaph street yesterday morning. The men had diverted to Geddie's storeto pick up supplies, and / some stray pickets stopped them and asked them their business. The pickets refused to believe that the waggons were bound for anywhere but the : 'specials' " camp. They had evidently got hold of the erroneous impression that the Defence Department is taking an active part m its organisation. Eventually the waggons got clear and proceeded on their, way to Tai Tapu. STRIKE COMMITTEE'S STORE OPENED. Operations were started yesterday at the- Strike Committee's store, in. Manchester street, when 60 loaves were provided for distribution. These were presented by a city "man, who has given an order to a baker to supply the same number -weekly. Persons who want supplies from the store are required to produce orders from the Lyttelton or the Christchurch Strike Committee. . ; THE STRIKERS' SIDE OF THE CASE. •The Strike Committee has decided to hold meetings in the country, districts for the purpose of stating the strikers' side of the dispute. Meetings have been arranged in Rakaia on -Wednosi day, Methven on Thursday, Glentunnel on* Friday, and Lake Coleridge,on Sunday. The speakers will be Messrs Jas. Thorn and E. Kennedy. Collections I will be taken in aid of the strike funds.
