MULCHING FRUIT TREES.
While all fruit trees, both, old and young, axe benefited by a good mulching at this time of year, it is of great value to nowly-planted once, and jgarticulaxly so where artificial watering is not available The difference in the growth of mulched trees and those not mulched, especially y in a dry season, is most marked. If it Co intended to - mulch the trees the work should be . dona at an early date. wiulo the soil is still moist. Before the mulching material is applied the "surface soil should be loosened with tho fork or hoe. It is tt big.mistake to pile up the mulch robid ' the stems-of *ne trees j it should bo kept about a foot away from , the;base of the stem.:ln the • case"of largo trees the main feeding- . roots aro from three to six, feet away, while in'newly-planted'ones they ore of course, pretty close to the stem.
