Mr W. A. Low arrived in Christchurch, yesterday to make arrangements for the opening of the Royal Pantomime Company at the Theatre Royal nest week.
Captain McDonald, Assistant Marine Superintendent _ for the union Steam Ship Company, Captain Henuah, * Dr. Tα it, and I<ady Ward, and Miss Ward arrived at". Lyttelton yesterday morning from the North.
Sir James Mills, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, and Mr C. Holdsworth,. general manager of the company, were passengers for the south by the Mannganui, which left Wellington for Lyttelton last evening. They intend to proceed through to Dunedin.
Mr H. L. Heron., general manager of the Commercial Bank of Australia, Limited, is paying a visit to the Dominion. It'will be remembered that theibank recently opened branches at Wellington, Auckland, and. Christchurch, and Mr Heron is pleased with the future prospects.
In consequence of tho decision of the Government to close the Public Works Office at Westport, Mr H. H. Sharp, resident engineer at Westport, will go to Grevmouthand afeume charge of the combined di&tricts of Grey and Buller. Mr J. H. Lewis, at present resident engineer at Greymouth, has been traneferred on promotion to Wyndham, in Southland.
At the conclusion of the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court in Nelsou, Mr J. S. Evans, S.M., will return to Wellington to take the place of the late Dr. McArthur, S.M.. until the present industrial trouble is over. Arrangements have been made for Messrs F. O*B. Loughnan. S.M.. and W. Wilson. S.M., to visit Nelson alternately to take the business of the local Magistrate's Court.
A farewell social was held in the hall at Makarowa,'Southland, on Tuesday night, to -Mr and -Mrs C. M. Buxtoii, and Mrs George, sen., who are retiring from farming and leaving for Timaru. Mr K. Finlavsou occupied the chair. Mr and Mrs Buxton were presented with a fine tea and coffee service and Mrs George with a clock. Proceedings terminated with a welcome to Mr A. Smith, the. incoming tenant of the farm.
\ Press Association telegram from Palmerston North states that Mr R. McNab reported to the annual meeting of the Philosophical Society that during a recent visit to Australia he spent a considerable time gathering intonnotion in relation to the early li storj of New Zealand. In Sydney he (liberal 163 sacks of papers relating to.the Mr McNab proposes to return to AustSia in the P autumn to continue his investigations. District Engineer, on behalf of the numbers of the Maintenance Branch, Presented Mr Young with a purse of sovereigns, and Mr J. B. Matheson. on behalf « f the members of the North Canterbury branch of tho Railway Offices' Institute, presented him with a handsome tea and coffee service. Concratulatory speeches were made by a number of those present, representing all branches of the service.
