TRADE WITH BRISTOL.
SHIPPING FACILITIES COMPARED. (PRBSS ASSOCIATION TELEGKAM.) WELLINGTON, November 19. A meeting of the New Zealand Board of Control of the Bristol and Dominion Producers' Association was held here to-day. Mr E. J: Collie, of Wellington, was appointed secretary.
A considerable amount of administrative work was settled, and it was decided to make advances on a. basis that Avould be new in the Dominiou as regards meat.
It was reported that there were quite a number of shipments of dairy produce already made, and that steps were being taken to send forward initial shipments of meat.
Mr W. D. Lysnar read a letter from Mr G. P. Donnelly, who has just rei turned from a trip to England, in ; which ho says:—"When at Home I ! made* it my business to visit both docks, and asked the High Commissioner to allow Mr Crabb, the Government veterinary surgeon and agent, to accompany mc, which he did- After going over the Bristol docks, I can safely cay that there is no comparison as far as" the handling of frozen meat and produce is concerned. The accom-. modation for transhipping could not be better at Bristol, and if they carry out further improvements in the accommodation, which I was informed they intend doing, it -will be everything that is required for our frozen meat and other products. I was more than surprised at the handling of frozen meat at the other docks. In London, after all those years of the shipping of frozen meat, it is surprising to see the primitive way jn •which the work is done. I actually found them running the frozen meat, from three to five carcases, on hand trollies for a distance of from two to three chains to the railway trucks in dust and dirt consisting of horse droppings and other refuse. As you sre aware, the Trheels are not above nine inches from the ground. There is no doubt that our going into this matter has given them « great shock, and they noir talk of jioing in for very large improvements. It clearly goes to prove that all you have said was quite justifiable to tho shippers in, the Dominion."
