A very pleasant outing was afforded yesterday by the- Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Show at Kirwee. The weather was perfect, and consequently there was a large attendance, including a number of visitors, who came by train or motor-car. The'takings at the> gates wero close upon £60. as against £55 last year. The Ashburton Highland Pipe Band supplied some lively music, and their playing and inarching were excellent. The "exhibits totalled 570, against 633 last year. 601 in 1911, and 589 in 1910. In a* district with such a deservedly high reputation for its sheep, it was surprising to rind the total only 91, against 119 last year. 142 in 1911, ISO in 1910, and 205 four years ago. Draught horses increased from 49 to 61, whilst light horses declined from 131 to 123. Pigs made an even -weaker showing than last year, the entries totalling 7, and poultry was another small class. The following table shows the entries under tbo various headings at the last four Shows:— 1910 1911 1912 1913 Sheep 180 142 119 91 CStUe - 2 ? :5G 51 56 Draught horses ... f j® 49 61 Light horses ... 104 OS. Although there was a considerable falling-otf in the entries, especially in sheep and light horses, the Show was a good one. The feature of the purebred sheep section was the very fine collection of English Leicesters' sent in by Messrs 11. and J. Heid, .vho wore, with the exception of one pen, the sole exhibitors of the breed, and gained full awards. There were only two pens of merino ewes and two of Border Leicesters. Mr D. Mulholland \;as the chief exhibitor and prize-taker in I and Messrs E. D. Joseph and Jarman Bros, also obtained several awards. Messrs Jarman Bros, showed some very fair Southdowns. and a very useful lot of crossbred* were penned, Mr W. J. Clinton taking the- tirst awards, except in the case of ewo hoggets for farmers purposes, in which Page's Trustees were first. Tho fat sheep show was coniined to the exhibits of Mr \V. J. Clinton and a couple of pens from Page's Trustees, and the former took all the I first awards. The sheep were all of very prime quality. The fat lamb classes were not as well iiilcd as in former years, but a very prime lot werepenned. Mr H. McClelland was the largest prize-taker, winning in five classes.-mid Messrs W. J. Clinton and Jarman Bros, also secured red tickets. Cecil Ashworth and Qucenie Henigan were first and second in pet lambs. i CATTLE. The cattle classes were much better ' filled than usual, especially with Ayrshires nnd dairy cows. Though the district is not devoted to dairying, more attention is evidently being given to enttlo for this purpose. Tlio Shorts horns were only moderate, tho chief prise-takers in bulls being Messrs "NY. Syme, H. McClelland, A. SV.Colce, and C. A. Narbcy. Mr W. J. Jonkins showed an excellent lot of Ayrsbires and took almost all tho prizes, and in Jerseys, which wero very fair, Mr T. E. Boyle was first in both cows, and heifers. *There was a largo class of ; dairy cows; and the winner was an Ayrshire cross shown by Mr D. A. Mc- i Meekan, Mr A. \Y. Colee's Shorthorn being second, and Mr \V. J. Jenkin's Ayrshire third. Mr It. Burgess showed the first nnd Mr A. W. Coioo tho second prize fat calf. DRAUGHT HORSES. An excellent lot of horses were shown, though in most classes there was not much competition. In the stallion class Mr W. J. Jenkins's imported Nethan Vale, a very evenly-put-together horse, but whose high action behind rather detracts from his appearance when moving, had a fairly easy.win from Mr H. Peach's Bonnie Scotland. a low-set, nuggety-built horse, and Mr AY. J. Gibbs's Dalmuir Clyde. Messrs Lill and Wostenra's fine threo-year-old colt Reformer was first in his' class against Mr I*. Gemmell's Marshall's Pride, and was subsequently awarded the championship. Mr W. "J. Jeukius's Knight of Clydebank, a very promising, evenly-built colt, had an easy win from two others in the two-year-old class. Messrs A. and "NY. Gillandms's handsome mare Royal Ruby was first in the brood niaro class against. Mr K. E. Jenkins's Maggie 111-, and later on Royal Ruby was awarded the championship. Mr E. E. Jenkins had the dry mare class to himsolf, showing three good animals, of whom Princess Ena was first. Mr H. McClelland was first in aged geldings with a big, upstanding horse j and Mr E. E. Jenkins's pair beat those of Mr \V. J. Clinton, but the positions were reversed in the four-horse teams. In tho younger classes of fillies and geldings the chief prize-.wiuners were Messrs E E. Jenkins. H. McClelland, J. Cojran. P. Lill. and J. H. Nelson, and Mr R. Gommell showed the best epringdray horse. The Christ<:him:h' Hunt Club's specials for two-year-old, and yearling fillies were won respectively by Messrs E. E. Jenkins, J. H. Nelson,* ami P. Lill. LIGHT HORSES. The only thoroughbred entire shown was Mr J. H. Selby's Uawiri. A lot of very good hackneys were shown in tho breeding classes, and the saddle horso classes were well filled,, the winners in ponies being Messrs P. Ballantyno, Jarman Bros., and in cobs Mr W. J. Jen- ; kins. Some well-known horses competed in the hack classes, Messrs A. and \V. Gillanders winning in 14 stone. J. H. Selby in 11 stone, and D. W. Westenra in ladies' hacks. Trooper I). Robertson won in two troop horse classes, and Mrs H. Boyle in jumping pony. Messrs A. and VV. Gijlanders' Westwood was adjudged the best hack and harness horse on the ground. There wero some excellent performances in the hunter classes. In the 11 stone class the judces could not decide between Mrs J. D. Hall's Sportsman and Mr J. H. Selby's Clarence, and they were placed equal first, their jumping being so even. In the 14 stone class it was an equally close thing so far as jumping "was concerned between Mrs J. D. Hall's Vedette and Mr D. W. 'Wostenra's Katerfelto, and they were placed in that order after the horses themselves had been judged«, Mr G. Gadsell showed the only entiTe for harness purposes, hut thereVas fair competition in mares and young stock. In the classes for horses shown in harness the winners were H. McCleJfcind, A. and W. Gillanders. F. L. Sandrey, and H. Sowden. and in ponies Messrs C. Voice and Mrs J. H. Williams. PIGS, POULTRY, AND DOGS. There were small but fair shows of pigs, poultry, and sheep-dogs. FARM PRODUCE. There were large. entries • and keen competition in the farm prodiice classes, and the prizes -were well divided". TENTS AND STANDS. There were a number of stands and tents on the ground, including those of the Canterbury tYoiwn Meat and Christchurcii Meat Companies, New Zealand Farmers.' Co-op. Association,
"Messrs Milner and liiompson, and Johnson and Cousins. JUDGES. The judges were:—Merinos. Messrs T). Manson and J. StringfcUow; Enp;lish Leicesters. Border Leicester*, and urossbrods, Messrs J.
