THE OYSTER SEASON.
GOOD SUPPLY FROM AUCKLAND
(special to "the press. ,, ) WELLINGTON, November 20. The Secretary to the Marino Department (Mr George Allport) states that the past oyster season has been very, successful as far as the Auckland rock" oysters controlled by tho Marine Department were concerned. There was an exceUenfc demand for the bivalves at tho beginning of the season, but as is usual there was a falling-off towards tho end. "We could have supplied a greater demand," says Mr Allport, "but, on tho whole, we were very satisfied with the number of orders "placed. I anticipate that wo will have any quantity to meet all demands likely to be made next year, as has been "the case this year. 5. During. the season much replanting was done in the Hauraki Gulf, the method used being that of removing big rocks with the young oysters still clinging to them. The oysters replanted last year and the year before are sprouting well, but will not be picked for two or three years to come. The oyster takes four years to mature. It is the intention of tho Marine Department to continue reolanting, and bo renew the beds which were depleted -when the trade was privately controlled,
