The Sprcydon Boough Council mot st -r, ,u^ lt .* Present—The Mayor (Mr G. R. Whiting), and Crs. W. H. Atkinson, A. Manbire, D. Sykes, S. Hancock, 3nd E. Hayes. Before proceeding .with tho business the Mayor referred to tho, death of Mr Georgo Laurenson, M.P. Ho -said he had known Mr Laurenson for somo considerable timo. The deceased had represented Sprcydon when that district was in his electorate. He was ono Of the straightest men in Parliament, and ono of the strongest supporters of land reform. The speaker mov-cd that a motion of sympathy bo forwarded to Mrs Lauren-son and family. Cr. Sykes, in seconding tho motion, said tho deceased was "a real whit© man." Ho could not find wordi. to oxpress> his appreciation of tho late statesman. Ho felt that ho had lost a personal friond. The motion was carried, all standing. The Mayor reported that tlio sum of £1200 had been taken up in debentures for tho pit loan since the last meeting-, and ho anticipated that tho total amount would be forthcoming at the end of the month. > Tho Works Committee reported that since, last meeting five building permits had been issued to tho amountof £750. The recommendation of the Water Supply Comroitt-eo that a rent of 10s be charged for water meters supplied by the council was held over pending a "meeting of tho ratepayers interested. The Finance Committee recommended that no further lamp posts be erected on account of the probability of electric lighting being adopted in tho nca,r future. Agreed to with tho exception of a lamp at tho corner of Aylmer and Young streets. Tho financial statement showed a debit balance of £764 10s 8d on the district. fund account? a credit balance on the loan acount of £3393 16s 6d, and a debit balance on the temporary loan account of £1000.
