WELLINGTON, November 19
Work is proceeding Briskly on the wharves, and one needs only to take a stroll along the waterfront to realise how surely and steadily the back of the strike is being broken. This is reflected in the large increase iv the membership of the new wharf labourers' union, which was recorded to-day.
In all directions to-day cargo operations were proceeding at a merry pace, and carting was in full swing. Tho King's Wharf especially presented a picture of animation. In addition to discharging work on the Remuera, the loading of the Union Company's steamer Kittawa for Napier, Gisoorne, and Auckland was busily carried on. Tho Kittawa, which will leave tomorrow, will take about 900 tons of general cargo (mainly transhipment) lor Auckland. The large White Star liner Corinthic commenced to discharge her cargo toTho ranks of the new wharf labourers' union were swelled to-day by tho joining of about 130 additional men, nearly all town residents, swelling the total membership to about a thousand. The number included 80 or 90 members of the old union. So many men have been offering that to-day there was not enough work to keep them all employed, and over ono hundred of them were waiting about all day for somo of tho other vessels in the stream to berth.
