TUESDAY'S TROUBLE. In reporting the trouble that took ■*' place on the wharves on -Tuesday after- • ? noon, a local journal, under the 'heading of '•Alleged Cause of the Trouble." states that the men believed ' the U.S.S. Co. had given an undertaking that no cargo would be worked ' by ferry steamers under certain condi- '• tions. "Mr W. V. Craske, sub-manager . of the U.S.S. Co. at Lytteiton, states that no such guarantee has been given to the men on strike by any responsible officer of the company, nor has anything been said that could possibly be construed into an undertaking of this kind. , . , ~ . . ' It is further explained that some days ago. when it was desired to ship some stores, the president of the Union gavo permission for the stores to be shipped, and it is believed that an ■undertaking was then given by the Company that advantage would not bo taken to ship any cargo on that occasion Tho undertaking referred to, however, applied only to the particular occasion* and was not to apply to any other occasion.
