STRIKERS' MANIFESTO.

Tho following manifesto was handed to ono of. our representatives yesterday morning:— Lytteiton. November 19th. From the Strike Committee At the Waterfront. "A meeting was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Lytteiton, to-day. Thero was a full attendance of members present. A considerable amount of business was through, and numerous donations wero received, including one of £10, from Messrs Grainger and Close, to assist those engaged in tho present struggle. A number of gentlemen addressed the men, including Mr Fletcher, of Christchurch. The J Strike Committee then adjourned. We have a request to make to whoai it may concern. A letter was received that Clarke Bros., woodturners, 99 Tuam street, Chiistchurch, are not making batons, as rumoured, and do not intend to do | so. "Telegrams were received from the various ports engaged in tho struggle to say all were solid. Several dona- ! tionsaro coming to hand."

TUESDAY'S TROUBLE. In reporting the trouble that took ■*' place on the wharves on -Tuesday after- • ? noon, a local journal, under the 'heading of '•Alleged Cause of the Trouble." states that the men believed ' the U.S.S. Co. had given an undertaking that no cargo would be worked ' by ferry steamers under certain condi- '• tions. "Mr W. V. Craske, sub-manager . of the U.S.S. Co. at Lytteiton, states that no such guarantee has been given to the men on strike by any responsible officer of the company, nor has anything been said that could possibly be construed into an undertaking of this kind. , . , ~ . . ' It is further explained that some days ago. when it was desired to ship some stores, the president of the Union gavo permission for the stores to be shipped, and it is believed that an ■undertaking was then given by the Company that advantage would not bo taken to ship any cargo on that occasion Tho undertaking referred to, however, applied only to the particular occasion* and was not to apply to any other occasion.
