WAYWARD GIRLS
COMMITTED TO HOMES,
"At tho Juvenile Court yesterday beforo Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., two girls, 3ged nearly 16 and 14i years respectively, were charged with not being under proper control. Sonior-Sergeant Mathiespn stated that tho girls were quite beyond control, and were always on the streets, in company with boys and young men. The parents had been warned by the police to keep them under proper control, but this they had failed to do.
Tho secretary of the Coal and Blanket Fund, Miss Cardale, said the girls were out all hours of the night. She had warned the mother of one of them, who had taken no action, saying that she was unable to keep her daughter at home.
Sergeunt Dwan said be had spoken to tho parents . and- the girls themselves, and warned them that if their children kept Tinder proper control they" would be brought before the Court. There had been a short, temporary improvement, and then a relapse id' former conditions. One of the K-ris was living with her parents, and the. other with her stepmother, tho latter being addicted to drink.
The mother of the former girl stated that her daughter had been coming home at 8.30 every night for a time, but the Magistrate remarked that people did not come to Court to tell lie 3 about her children. Both mothers pleaded for another chaiice for a month or so. Mr Bishop said that both girls wero nt an ago when they needed every care, or their lives would be blighted. In reply to the Magistrate, one of the mothers said she did her best to keep her daughter under control, but, being away at work, she could not koop her under strict supervision. His Worship said ho did not liko to separate children from their parents, but this was a case in which something must be done. The younger girl was committed to St. Mary's Home, Nelson, and the other to the Receiving Home. The latter's mother then asserted that her daughter ivas 16. but the Magistrate said that if that was so she would have to be tried in. tho Criminal Court for having insufficient lawful means of support.
