FIRES.
At about half-jyast five last night a fire was discovered in the drying-room oi Messrs Smith and Smith's timber yard at the corner of the "Waltham road and ihe South belt. The brigade turned out promptly and extinguished the outbreak before much damage was done. Tho building was insured for £350 in tlio Royal office, and the contents for £830.

MASTERTON, May 19
A fire broke out at 1 a.m. in a fruit shop and billiard saloon occupied by a Japanese named Ah Lop, in part of a two-storey block of buildings closo to the Post Office. It was raining heavily at the time, one! the lire spread along the upper storeys and practically destroyed tho buildings. The occupiers were:—Mrs Home, refreshment saloon; Blinlchorn, tobacconist; Clarke, fish shop; Cole and Westerman, drapers. A large part of the latter'.s stock was removed, but was much damaged. The buildings belonged to the Trust Ls.nds Trust, and were erected many yea re ago. Mr and Mrs Home and two children slept on the premises and had a narrow escape. The insurances amount to £3001). Immediately aftor this fire Butemenfs brewery, an old unoccupied building," was burned down. It was insured for £100.
