FOR THE CHILDREN.

The fund that is being raised for the erection of a children's ward at the Hospital receives a substantial addition, as the result of the street collections on Saturday. The movement carries its own recommendation, as any project for the benefit of the chiiuren, especially the sick and suffering little ones, must do, and it is gratifying to notice not only a general desire that the ward shall be built, but a general willingness to assist in providing the required funds. Sympathy is welcome, but sympathy by itself will go a very little way to pay for bricks and mortar. "What is needed is that every member of the community shall ask himself or herself the familiar question, "How much do you "sympathise?" If all answer that question to the best of their individual ability, all the money wanted will be provided -without difficulty. It is pleasant to see, in connection, with the movement, some of that admirable spirit of emulation between diffeaient seotions of the community that does so much to swell the receipts from "Hospital Saturday" in AuetraJia. Report credits the employees of several of the large business firms in town with the intention of raising £50 for a cot in the new ward, the cycle makers have decided to found a "Bioyole" cot, and other trades, unwilling to be outdone in good works, may yet be heard from to the same effect. It is a rivalry which, has the unusual advantage of benefiting all concerned.
