MURDER AND SUICIDE.
A NORTH ISLAND TRAGEDY

The police authorities liave received information of a distressing tragedy at
.•aiowaka. Yesterday a settler named Henry Thomas, aged thirty-seven, shot dead bis soitj William John. Thomas, a, lad of eighteen, and after attempting to shoot his wife and daughter committed suicide by blowing away ' his face with a shot gun. No reason is assigned for the affair. PAHIATUA. January 30. Harry Thomas, a -well-known settler at Waiowako, aged 37, shot his won William, aged 18, last night,- and then committed suicide. The boy wae in the act of lighting a fire v/hen his fathei* placed the puzzle of a gun behind his ear and killed him instantaneously. Afterwards the man placed the inuzzlo in his own mouth and blew his brains wit. Thomas was in Pahiatua yesterappeared to be in his usual, condition, but il is stated ho 'suffered from an injury received to his head several years ago, and at times became uncontrollable. Ife ie, therefore, mitmisetl that he was in one of these fits at the time of the tragedy.
