DEANS MEMORIAL COMMITTEE.

The meeting of •&■& Robert Deans I 'Memorial Committee last evening was attended, by -Messrs C. E. Bevan-Brown, (chairman), T. W. Reese, T. Bain, E. T. Harper, C. Buchanan, G. H. Mason, B. K. S. Lawrence, and. 6. A. Cl3rk (bon. secretary). Mr I>ouglas forwarded his resignation from the eommiiittee, owing to his a.bsence from Christchurch. Mr G. H. Mason moved tlia-t the original motion,"be- amended as follows: — "That ,the memorial take the form of, firstly, a. tablet- to be placed in the 6dhool, and, secondly, a fund to be raised, .the interest from which shall ■bo applied as a. Robert Deans Memorial Scholanslup, to be awarded somewhat on the lines of the Rhodes Scholarship a.nd not by examination, such scholarship to be open to (boys from any public sahool in the Dominion., provided •that the holder mus£ attexid the Christchuroh Boys' School throughout the term of the scholarship." Mr Mason explained that opinion Jiad been expiressed in some quarters that the eoholars'hdp Should not confined to one- school—rtshe. Boys' High School—as was originally intended, but that lads attending secondary andwlistriet high, schools should be -eligible, tihey were possessed of tihe necessary aiftainmen.ts. He recognised tlhat .in, making tihe schoJarshap applicable, to the •wihol© of the- Dominion a good deal of difficulty -would be experienced, and perhaps on that account it would be better to confine it to Canterbury. He had brought the. matter lip, ho said, simply with » view to hearing a discussions on it, as he was anxious to , obtain the. views of the other members of the committee. Mr T. W. Reese seconded the amendment. After an informal discussion, it was decided tha.t the proposal be held over for consideration by « more fully attended meeting of the committee. It was decided that those in. charge of subscription lists be asked to inti-moit-e a.t the next meeting tho amouuts they had collected for the fund. Thedate of the next meetiftg of the committee, was fixed for Friday, February 12th, at 5 p.m.
