The Wakatu left Wellington at 6 p.m. on Monday, called at Kaikoura and Eobineon, and arrived at Lyttelton at 10.15 p.m. on Tuesday. She left last night for W«l----linerton. etc. _ The Mararoa arrived from Dunedin at 7 c.m. yesterday, and left for Sydney, via Aueklacd/laet evening. _ . The Tarawera arrived from Wellington at 7.55 a.m. yesterday, and left for Wellington The Waihora, from Auckland, via the east coast, arrived! at 9.15 *.m, yesterday, and, left for Dunedin about S p.m. The Wellington went into dock *t 6 o'clock yesterday morning. . . . „ , • ' The River Boyno was towed into the stream yesterday forenoon, and at once sailed for SydOaptain Stringer, of the Pukaki, reports that he took the ship Wellington in tow .at 8.30 p.m. on Sunday last. About 11.30 p.m. tha vessels ran into dense fog which continued till 10 a.m. on Monday, when Stephens Island •was sighted. Afterwards the weather wae thick «Tid haay, with occasional clearing*. The Brothers were rounded at 8 p.m. on Monday, and at midnight tho calm weather, which had hitherto prevailed, was followed by strong North 4o North-West winds with a folldwing sea. Cape Campbell was rounded at 3 a, m.
on Tuesday, when the wind had moderated. Port Kobinson was passed at 6 p.m. end Lyttoltoa Heads were sighted at 8.80 p.m. Lyttelton harbour was entered at 5.55 a-ni. yesterday, and the tug Lyttelton mot the vessels, and took the Wellington into dock. The damage to the Wellington's rudder was caused by her running into tho Nelson wharf while she waa going astern on January 16th. The steam launch Wtiven went on to the slip yesterday. Tho Cygnet arrived from Akaroa. yesterday. The Southern Isle arrived from Collingwood at 6 p.m. yesterday. Now that oil fuel is coming into such favour, it is interesting to note trom the report on J the "Mineral Resources of the United States for 1901," recently isetied by the U.S. Geological Survey, that the production of crude petroleum last year amounted to 165,333,733 barrels, of 42 gallons *»<"h. To this total Russia, contributed 51.5 per cent, and America 41.35 per cent. Up to 1338 the United States led the world in the quantity annually produced, but in that year Russia forged to the front, end b.-s eihce not only maintained its position, but has increased its lead. Beginning with 1896, the Russian production has been, increasing by en average of over 12 per cent. each. yew to the close of 1901.
. The following report of th« movements cf steamers coming from N«w York ie of interest:—The Allanton crrived at Melbourne on the 4th inst, and is due at Sydney on the 13th inst. The Queen Oristina sailed New York 18th for Australian ports. The Queen Mary left New York January 7th for New Zealand poTts. Tho Jeserio was advised as to sail from New York on January 31st. The Essex, twin-screw, was to sail from Now York on January 31st for Australian ports. The Louise Roth is edvis6d as to sail from New York about March' 3rd for New Zealand -ports. Tho Rippingh«m Grange will sail from New York about Maroh 10th for Australian ports. The ketch Joe*ph Sims, Captain Berg, sailed on Tuesday morning for Westport, after having lain in the Kaiepoi river for three months.
The largest sailing ship in the world, tie Preussen, reoently staxted on her first voyage to the west ooaet of South America. Her length is 440 ft, beam 50ft, and draught 33ft. She has a carrying capacity of 8000 tons, while her registered tonnage is 4000. The Preuasen vw built in the shipbuilding yards of Geestemuende, famous the world over for its fast sailing vessels. She is a five-masted, fulKrigged, eteel vessel, steel epnrred throughout. As in most large modern sailing vessels, •team power is uaea to drive the capstans, pumps, and steering gear. As a result, her crew consists of only 46 hands.
