THE LATE HON. W. ROLLESTON.
REFERENCES AT THE EDUCATION BOARD.
At the meeting of the Board of Education yesterday, before the ordinary business was taken, the Chairman (Mr C. A. C. Hardy, M.H.R.) moved.—"That this Board deeires to place on record its sense of the great loss the colony ha 3 sustained by the death of the Hon. W. Rolleston, who at different times, as member of the Senate of the University of New Zealand, member of tho Canterbury Board of Education, Inspector of Native Schools, Superintendent of the Province of Canterbury, and Minister of Education, had identified himself so closely with, and achieved so much for, the cause of education in New Zealand; and that the Board respectfully tenders to Mrs Rolleston and her family Uβ heartfelt sympathy with them in theii bereavement." He said that a great man had gone to his rest, and that it would be well for the colony if it possessed many like him.
Mr Adams, in seconding the motion, said that as a district they owed much to Mr Rolleston, and those who worked with him. in the early days. One might be justified in saying "that no other man in New Zealand hod taken such a deep interest in educational matters, and Mr Bowen, in moving his Education Bill in 1877 had had a hearty seconder in Mr Rolleston. He was sure the country had suffered a great loss through the removal of Mr Rolleston. Mr Rennie and Mr Peryman also paid tributes to Mr Rolleston's memory. The latter. recalled an incident when an officer of the Board was assisted by Mr Rolleston, and had thanked him for what he haa done for him. "Never mind,'" Mr Rolleston had said, "Never mind; pass it on!" This was the sort of man the colony wanted and lnifised. Mr Buddo also added his tribute. Tho motion wae agreed to in silence, the members signifying their assent by standing-
