THE LATE HON. W. ROLLESTON
Before the ordinary business of the Sydenham Borough Council was proceeded with last night, the Mayor (Mr J B. Sim) said that he had a motion to propose, which would meet with the approval of tho Council. It was—"That this Council desires to place on record its appreciation of the valuable public services rendered to the colony by the late Hon. W. Rolleston, and ite deep sense of the loss that this province and the colony have sustained by his death, and begs to tender to his widow and family its sincere sympathy in their bereavement.* In proposing tbe motion the Mayor said that during the last week tbe public press, and public men generally had paid tributes of respect to the late Hon. W. Rolketon, and there was little left for him to add. Suffice it to say that with all that had been said wih regard to Mr Rolleston's public ser-, vices he heartily agreed. Other Councillors also spoke, and the motion was put and carried. , At the meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last night the Mayor (Mr JGrubb) referred to the loss Canterbury and the colony of New Zealand had sustained by the death of the Hon. W. Rolleston. He moved a vote of condolence with the family of the deceased gentleman. Cr. Webb seconded the motion, apd referred to liis personal experience of the courtesy and public spirit of Mr Rolleston. The motion was carried unanimously. At St. Saviour's Church, Templeton, on Sunday, the Rev. J. Blackburn, before proceeding with his sermon, made reference to the late Hon. W. Rolleston as a representative of the district, a statesman of the colony, and an earnest Christian gentleman.
