FIELD-MARSHAL SIR JOHN SIMMONS

(Received February 16th, 8.42 a.m.) - LONDON, February 15. The death is announced of Field-Marshal Sir John Simmons, aged 82. Sir John Lintom Arabin Simmons, G.C.8., K.0.M.G., Field-Marshal, was born on February 12th, 1821. Educated at Guernsey and the Woolwich Academy, lie entered the Royal Engineers in 1837. Among his numerous positions at various times were:—Commissioner with Ottoman Army 1854-56; Consul-General Warsaw 1857-60; Commanding Royal Engineers, Aldershot, 1860-65; Director School of Military Engineering, Chatham, 186 5<w; Governor Woolwich Academy 1870-75. He was attached to the special mission of Lord Beaconsfield and Lord Salisbury to Berlin in 1878, was Inspector-General of Fortifications 1875-80. Governor of Malta 1884-88, and Envoy Extraordinary to the Pope 1889-90. He" was appointed FieldMarshal in 1890.
