NOTES ON THE GAME.
(SPECIAL TO "THE PBESfI.") DUNEDIN, February 13. The weather was eimpiy perfect for the match to-day, and the gate was a large one, over £200 being taken in cash. The wicket was one of the best prepared at Carisbrook for many a day. Otago, in. scoring 124, did as well as most people expected, their batting being very weak this season. Fisher played freely for his 23, which included tnree 4'e. Siedeberg, with 21, made a score for once in p. way in big cricket, while Howden, With 19, batted confidentlyOtago were at the wickets for an hour and three-quarters. Burnup, who could not get a wicket in Canterbury, came out with the best average. The Englishmen did not start too well. Downee had th,e batsmen in trouble at the jump, but luck was against him. Burnup gave two chances off him right away, but the fieldsmen could not judge the ball owing to the sun. Warner, when he had made- 6, gave Fieber an easy chance in the slips off Dowses, but this usually safe field dropped it. Downes was beating both bat and wicket. Fane could do nothing with him, and was beaten four times in succession, 12 being scored as the result for byes. The work Downee got on was astonishing, and to well did he bowl that only two 4's were scored off him. He, unfortunately, had bit left hand badly injured in stopping a hot one. Warner
hour, and at the call of time the score ■toed 134 for one wicket. Warner made 64 not out-, his score including nine 4'i. Fisher also bowled veil, but Austin and Eckhoff proved 1 expensive, Fane getting hie 33 chiefly off these two bowlers. Downes cent down 15 overs, including 5* maidens, for 30 runs. Fiaher got one for 51.
