POPULARISING NAPLES.
THE MOVEMENT TO ATTRACT TOURISTS. United Press Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received February 13th, 8.47 0.m.) LONDON, February 12. Beginning in April, a special express leaves Naples far Medina, on the French frontier, conveying the Australian mails, arriving by the Orient steamers, without any preliminary medical inspection, A telegram from Rome on February 10th stated that with a view to preventing the Orient Steamers from ceasing to call at Naples, the Italian Government would provide a post office there, and institute special mail trains when arrangemente were concluded with the French railway system. Telegraphing from Rome on December 26th, the Rome correspondent of the "Daily Mail" said: — "The economic problem of Naples is just now perplexing the Italian government very seriously. Naples is a town of over 500,000 inhabitants, and' is without any staple industry, with the result that there are always at leaet 160,000 unemployed, and consequently distress and misery are never absent. "All efforts to develop trades have failed, but it is now proposed to make Naples the Mecca of all tourists to Italy, it being recognised that tourists are likely to prove dte main source of subsistence.. Among the plans proposed is one lor the erection of a large gambling casino on the lines of that at Monte Carlo. It u> further proposed to line the shores of the famous Bay of Naples with magnificent hotels. By these measures it is hoped to solve- the , problem upon which the existence of Naples depends.'
