GREATER CHRISTCHURCH
•MEETING OF THE LINWOOD COUNCIL.
A special- meeting of the Linwood Borough Council was held last night, to consider matters in connection with Greater Ohrietohurch, The (Mayor said it was necessary for them to petition the Governor on the subject within thirty days. He did nob agn«e with tha representation proposals, and thought it better if the boundaries could be altered so that Linwood might take in nart of Sydenham, and St. Albans part of Richmond. This might be 60 adjusted as to give the city five members, Sydeni*.i three, Linwood three, and St. Albans tnree, which would make the representation required with the number of 'memlbers as already proposed. He felt sure they would be dissatisfied unless the boundaries of the wards were co altered ac to equalise the representation. He did not , wish to do anything to keep the echeme back, but at the same time he thought it woa the duty of Linwood to ensure adequate representation before the matter had passed beyond their control, and a conference of the boroughs should be held to secure them".
The clerk then wad-the draft petition prepared by the borough solicitor, praying his Excellency that tfhe city am the boroughs of Sydenham, St. Albans, and Linwood might be amalgamated. The petition was amended so as to pray that the new city toe divided into four wards, the boundaries of which should be mutually agreed upon by representatives of the city and boroughs. - Gγ. Jamieson felt euro* that the representation of the boroughs would work out all right in a very short as toe borough population was increasing in a much foster ratio than that of the city. The petition as amended wae passed, and it was decided that the seal of the Council be affixed thereto, and that it be forwarded to his Excellency the Governor.' Cγ. Seed objected to the four bow wards being named after the present boroughs, as, mentioned on the council's minutes, .and' suggested Christchurch iiast. for Linwood, Chnstchurchi , South for Sydenham, and Chriatchuroh North for ©b. Albans. He moved this as a recommehdattdon to the conference.
Cr. Bmnt preferred the poteen* names. It was resolved to delete' ail proposed names from the minutes. The Mayor and Crs. Brown and Seed were appointed ac delegates for the borough, should t&e Mayor of Christchurch call a conference. It was also resolved—"That the Mayor of Ohristchurch be requested to cell a conference of the local bodies interested at an early date to consider matters in connection with amalgamation."
