Speaking at a banquet, Mr Chamberlain said toe colonies had their Khare of the responsibilities of the Empire. Addressing all the colonies, foe said they -were not doing whalfc they ought to do in regard to the obligations of the Empire.

All hope, of the Empire's future, he said, ■was based on the feeling that th« colonies would co-operate -with the Motherland in retaining one people, and prove that the Empire was founded on a community of sacrifice. Hβ attributed the Dutch discontent to the mischievous propaganda designed to foster race feeling. He appealed to the Dutch to put aside their separate aspirations and become partners in an Empire destined to accomplish a great mission of justice, freedom, and equality. He was sanguine of the assured loyalty of the new colonies, and saiu tihe Cape Tsrouid lose its footing unless Jt followed tJhe rest of South Africa. While the Motherland would defend its heritage to> tho last man, the colonies had their snare of the responsibilities of Empire.
