A POLITICAL HAGGIS.

Mr T. E. Taylor's description of the gathering which aesembled last night to congratulate Mr Witty, M.H.R., for Biocarton, on hie election, was decidedly neat, and every Scotchman, at least, would recognise that in terming it a "veritable political haggis" the member for Chrtetcburoh was highly complimentary. We confess we are ignorant, except in a vague way, of the constituents of the "chieftain o , the pifddin', race," and *re, therefore, unable to say precisely what ingredient Mr Charlesr Lewie represented, but it was something which made up in strength for what it lacked in quantity. In epite, however, ©i hie assertion that he was opposed to every man on the platform, Mr Lewie wae amity itself, and he was able to congratulate Biccarton on its choioe of a member, as sincerely as was the Hon. Mr Walker or Mr Taylor. In fact, it is. one of the peculiarities of the Biccarton election that the mew member is politically as well as personally acceptable to both sides of the House, There ore few members in the House of whom as much could be said. For oureelvee the Government are at liberty to get as much satisfaction as they can out of Mr Witty , * election; we are quite content to believe that a man who so strenuously supported the late Mr Bolleston as he did will do as he* promised last night. He had been told, he said, to stick to his party, but he would stick to his principles. If he is guided by that policy throughout his political career, and refuses to become a party hack, Biccarton should have no reason to regret ite choioe. We congratulate Mr Witty on the popularity of his election, as shown by last night's gathering.
