DIOCESAN STANDING COMMITTEE.
At a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Christchurch the Bishop announced the arrival of the Key. C. W. Carrington, M.A., to take charge of the upper department of Christ's College, and of tho Rev. J. R. Wilkin, 8.A., to be curate in the parish of Timaru; also, that he was expecting the arrival of the Rev. Otho Fitzgerald, to be curate of St. Michael's, Christchurch, and of the Rev. J. Holloway, to take charge of the southern part of the Waimate cute, pending its division by Synod. Kane fop a bell-tower on the Waimate Church site were approved. Plane for improvement* at St. John's, Wpoleton, and for a new schoolroom at Ainberley were considered, and ttie question of approval was held over for conference with the.local authorities. A report from the sub-committee on temperance matters was read and adopted. The election of a member of this sub-committee, vice the Rev. H. H. Matbiae, resigned, was held over. The organising secretary (Yen. Archdeacon Scott) of the Church Mission,presented an encouraging report on- the rand, v which was read. An interim report by the sub-committee oh the diocesan staff was read and adopted. The Diocesan Treaeurei reported that the offerings in Advent, 1902, for the Maori Mission, ehowed an increase of £115 on those of 1901. It was agreed to remit £100 to the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Auckland, to be expended, j in the maintenance of Maori cjergy:."«•., ficiating within thai diocese. The Biebop , stated that he had given cix months, notice of the determination of his elgcgedMnt with the chufHyn of the Maori Mu»ion\of j this diocese, with a view to fresh arrange- j menta with the parochial clergy for the wort of the Mission. A movement was on I foofc among the Maoris to raise the stipend of a chaplain themselves, with the aid o{ the Chatham Island endowment, and a conference with, them on the subject was to be held. Mr Helyar Wedderburn Bishop was appointed a diocesan ! nominator fa theplace of iba late. Mr R. J- ! S Harman, Mr Thomas De Renzy Harman was elected a member of tfce Clergy Pension Trust Board, in the place of hie late father, and t/be Bishop signed and eeaied the deed! of appointment in -the presence of j the meeting. Nominatione were then received for the election of a member of ttie Standing Committee, to tbe etead of the Rev. H. H. Matbiae, resigned, in order to visit England. Three ctergv were respectively nominated, but as no election w»Uited from euccearive ballot*, the matter was deferred. The Rev. C H. Qoeset was elected on the eub-commityee for church missions. A grant of £20 was made to the vicar of Akaroa towards the expenses of his removal to Lincoln- The church people of Makarora Lake Wanaka (within the diocese of Chrietohiurch) having applied for aid in order to increased services there by the vicar of Pembroke, Otago, it -was decided to inquire what increase in ihe frequency of the services held by him was practicable. Inquiry having been made as to the probability of a Church Property' Trust grant of £50 for a curate in the Longbeach district, it was resohred to advise the vicar to confer with tie Bishop on uhe eubject. Applications from Governor's Bay and' Leitnfield with reference to the Church Mission Fund grants 1S» tihoee cures, were referred to the sub-committee on church missions. An application from tbe Levels County Council to purchase land, part of the PleaBant' Point endowment, for a connecting I r/>ad, was agreed to, and iie matter wae referred to the Church Property Trustees,, with power to act, and to fix the price. A
