'Hlw fuiun-al cortege assembled at the residence, in Park Terrace, of Mr A. C. Rollcston (the deceased gentleman's eldest- eon), and the long line of vehicles stretched for nearly half a mile. The cortege proceeded to the Avoneide Glnirohyaid by Kiimore street and the river-eide.
The.totting of the bell from the olrarcihtower announced tbe arrival of the coffin at the gates of the Church. It wae met by the Bishop of ChnsUiiuich and Canon Pascoe, vicar of the Avonside Church, and the introductory sentences of the burial sorvioe, epoken ac the body was carried to the Ohurch, were read by Canon Pascoo. The coffin : .was taken along the central aisle, and placed on two trestles at the foot of the chancel while the bearers, mourners, and friends of the lat« statesman took up , their seats in tihe nave of the Church. The psalme were sung by the choir, after -which the lesson, t>aWi from the fifteenth chapter of the First Epistle to the Corinthians, was read by the Bishop. The hymn, "Lead kindly light," was sung, and tiie Dead March in Saul was played by the church organist as the remains were being carried Church to the grave. The service ut the grave wa3 conducted by Bishop Julius and Canon Pascoe, the first portion of the eervice being read by. the Canon, and t%e second portion by the Bishop. Those who had foLowed the body from Paris Terrace to the Church, together with those who had proceeded direct to the Churchyard, grouped themselves round the open grave, and at the close of an impressive service, the majority of those present filed past the grave.
