CITY COUNCIL.

The City Council mst last nigbt. Present—The Mayor, Crs. Gray, Samuels, Loughnan, Clark, Wood, Tajlor, Simpson, Macdonald, Payling, and Smith. The receipts were stated aa being £5499 12e Id. Accounts -were passed 1 for payment amounting to £870 5s Bd. The debtor balance at the bank was £4275 13s sd. The Major eaid that he hod met the Mayors of the suburban boroughs that day to consider what steps should be taken in connection -with the amalgamation scheme. The Mayor of Sydenham had stated that the Sydenham Council would consider the question of the petition to the Governor on the 12th February, and the other two Mayors notified that their Councils would deal with the question on the 16th. The Technical Education Conference applied for 25 per cent, of the guarantee. It was resolved to par the amount. The Sydenham borough Council forwarded a letter with regard to the detention of pans on the railway crossing. It was resolved to reply that the Council would take care that pans were not left on the crossing in future. , The Sydenham Council also wrote with reference to the deep well, stating that it was now down 265 feet, and atking the City Council what arrangement* it proposed to make for sinking the well below the depth of 600 feet. Action on the letter wus'deferred till after the consideration of the report of the Works Committee. The Surveyor .reported that tie following building permite had been issued:—Outer area, 7, £2200; inner area, 4, £4460. The Antigua street footbridge had been completed and opened for traffic. The approaches would be finished when the earthwork had duly settled. Details of tie work done on the streets were aho given.The Finance Committee reported that in order to provide funds for the purchase and installation of the electrical plant to be worked in'oonnectkm with fch* city deatructor, the Committee recommended the Qpuntil to make a special order allocating; the surplus from the destructor and sanitary works and the Chriatchurch City Borrowing Act 1899, Loans to that special purpose. The Council went into committee to coosidfcr the report. On resuming, it was reported, that a motion had been agreed to postponing the matter for The Fire Brigade Committee recommended that £5 5g be voted to John, Kennedy, let* fireman of the City Brigade, on his retiring after twenty years' service. Mr B. Purvie, having resigned as engineer at the Chester street Station, application* were invited for the vacant position. The Committee had considered applicatione for the position of engineer at the Charter street Station, and recommended that B- A. Stewart be appointed at a salary of £100 per annum with free quarters. The report wus adoptedThe WoTks Committee recommended mat the tender of Messrs Booth, Maodonald and Co':-be accepted for the supply and erection of two tanks and stand at the abattoirs at a cost of. £141 10s; and .that the Council make a grant to the Sydenham Council in order that the well may be sunk such a depth an will test the water supply at a lowel level than has yet been teeted. Tbe clause of tha. report re abattoir tank was adopted.- * . After some discussion on the question of tho Sydenham deep well, Cr. Gray moved as an amendment — "That the Sydenham Council ba asked to defer any further action till the United Council of Greater Christchurch has had an opportunity of considering the question of a general water supply." Cr.Ola.rk seconded tihe amendment pro forme. The amendment was lost on a division. . . . : .. Cr. Samuels moved as a further amendment—'That the City Council - w>ll pay a share of the cost of going to the extent of 500 ft." Cγ. Simpson seconded it. The Mayor ruled that the adoption of the clause of the report would cover Cr. Samuele'e amendment, and, therefore, it was out of order.
