As usual the San Francisco mail number of "The Weekly Press" has a fine budget of colonial pictures. Occupying place of honour frre the i'.lustraftdonfl of a trip to the GBbert Islands, in which characteristic photos of the natives appear, as well as a view of H.M.S. Archer, in which the trip was made. Ttoe other prominent subjects which are dealt with pictorially is the tour of Lord Hawke's team of Eragilijjh cricketers through Neiw Zealand. The* English cricketers are shown in their characteristic cricket positions, and the games in Greymouth and Chmtchurch are shown in progress. The teams from Marlborough, Neteon, and Wetstland also appear. Ther? are numerous. other subjects dealt with, all of them of a otflonaal character. In the literature the serial, "Blackmail!" of which four chapters are given, reaches, in chapter VI., a singularly powerful and original situation. In the Farmer the Ram Fair held on ■luuradfty by the Canterbury A. and P. Association, is commented upon, and a report is given of the, results of the eale. Other editorial notes are on the reopening of tihe ports <xf iihe United) Kingdom to live stock from the Argentine and Uruguay, and food supplies in war time. There is em irustrucfive article on "Wool as an Organieni," from the pen of Professor Bowman, the well-known Edinburgh wool expert, and a history of the N«w Zealand and Australian Land Company forme interesting reading. Rural affairs in Europe are dea& wit/h £y a special correspondent, , and dairymen should read the aVtiole on keeping records* of dairy herds. Farm topics, stock and dairy notes, Farmers' Union news, and lettere from country "correspondents will also be found in the Farmer. Tne visit of Lord Hawke's team to the colony promises to bring about a revival of • interest in cricket, and the leading article in • the "Referee" dEeeuescs the start© of the game in New Zealand. Other subjects dealt with are "Early Two-year-old Racing," and!. the improvements which tfhe Canterbury Jockey Olttb intends to effect at Riccarton. The special feature of the cricket column*, is a full report t.f and oonwnenits on the game between the English team and Canterbury which was ooaniaenced on Friday last.
