SECONDARY EDUCATION.

THE ACTION OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

At a full meeting of members of the East Christchurch School Committee on Thursday, the action of the Board of Governors, at its last meeting, in not accepting the proposals of the Government in regard to free secondary education, caused an animated discussion, all »he members expressing an opinion adverse to the Board's decision, and some of the opinions were expressed pretty strongly. It was stated that the Board did not wish sons or daughters of the workers at the High Schools at all, and only catered for the wealthy*. One member suggested that the Board's action was only giving the Government another opportunity to bring in legislation to take away the Board's educational eudnyvments, if it did not use them for the advantage of the whole community. Incidentally, in the discussion, it yvas "stated that the" day students in engineering had a privilege over the night students, namely, the benefit of the eigineering machinery, yvhich yvas second to none this side of the Line, yvas only for the day students. For practical instruction the night students had to go to some of the local establishments; they had the theory, but not the practical part of the teaching, r utwithstanding that the machinery yvas there to give practical instruction to all the students, not to a select few. The followiug motion was carried unanimously, and copies yvere to be forwarded to the Board ot Governors, Board of Education, tho Education Department, and members of Parliament .—'•That the Board of Governors be urged to accept the proposals of the Government for the establishment of the scheme of secondary free education, the committee being of opinion that the present endowments of the Board are sufficient, yrith the Government subsidy, to meet all necessary expenses in connection with' the scheme."
