CASUALTIES.
MAN DROWNED AT LYTTELTON. Shortly after 4 a.m. yesterday, Arthur James, whose age was about twentyfive, was found apparently drowned near the steam launch, Lyttelton, of which he had recently been appointed engineer. He had been on board and sounded the whistle, according to instructions. Marks on the landing stage appear to indicate that the deceased bad slipped from it and fallen. Severe bruises on the head led to the belief that the fall stunned him, and, though he could swim, this prevented him from saving himself. The body was found by Mr PoppleweH, who got it out of the water, and quickly conveyed the information to Mr Mark Thomas. . Dr. Pairman was promptly on the spot, and for about two hours strenuous) efforts to restore animation were continued. Hiey were of no avail, however, and the body was taken to the morgue to await on inquest. Young James was much respected, and the fact that he was engaged to be married has added to the regret felt for his untimely end (PRESS ASSOCIATIOjr TELEGBAM.) WHANGAREI, February 6William Sproals, a miner at Kiripaka, was found drowned in a well.
