PROPOSED REGATTA AT LYTTELTON.
Last .night, in the.Lyttelton Borough Council Chambers, a publio meeting, attended by t-bout thirty, was l.e.d;to consider the holding of a* regatta «it the'.Bort during the stay, of the .Australian, squadton. In the absence of tha_Ma\oK- Captain Whitby was voted to, the chair. ' . The Chairman suggested that it ' would be a good thing; to hold a regatta at -rhfch. a good programme, including growing ani sailing events for the squadron, if possible, events for others tlfan those acKminected with the squadron. Mr J. Gnibb did not think it advisable that the Regatta Committee shouM take the matter in hand. He recommended that a Special Committee should undertake the promotion of a. fleet regatta. ' _• H
Mr G, Laurensoh, M.H.R., strongly supported the idea of holding a regatta as suggested.. He was'in a position'to say that the Railway Department • would make'the same concessions as at the'annual regatta. He moved—" That a. committee be set up to Bee what support could be received from tlie town, and if Sufficient support is offered, that n "regatta be held here during the visit of tl4 Australian squadron, under Vice-Admiral- $"»- shaw, next month!" ; Mr P. deary seconded the? motion .V . A discussion followed,-during whicV'the question of whether the proposed legitta should be simply a fleet, regfltta, or sbpiild include events for a *S_*neral programme-was doseussed. . • • / The motion was carried. Mr .Laurenson expressed a hope that at least £1(30 could bo raised. There was ample time to ascertain what amount would be contributed. As soon as a sufficient sum wa3 assured th j Admiral could be communicated with through "the Governor.
Mr J. Garrard moved—"That the regatta to be held be purely and simply a fleet regatta." Mr W. Cleary seconded this, and it was carried. Messrs J. Gnibb and P. Cleary were appointed a committee to collect subscriptions. • Mr P. Cleary was appointed hon. secretary, 1 and Mr J. Gruibb hon. treasurer.
