THE RAM FAIR.
The Canterbury Agricultural and 'Pastoral Association have not met with the success that was hoped for in holding an early mm fair this year. The experiment was carried out on the urgent request of a number of breeders who wished to take advantage of tihe demand from the North Hand, and who no doubt hopsd that under competition better prices would be given than were made by private sales to agents. The fair has, however, been held at too Jate a date for thde purpose, as during the past few weeks several hundred rams have been shipped north, and sufficient outeide supplies have been received to euppEement the number of rams that will be available at the local fairs j to be held at Palmeraton North, Masterton, and other centres thia month. The fair held yesterday may serve the purpose of advertising the fact that on early ram fair* has taken place and may pave the way to a more successful sale next year, but the fixture will require to be held fully a month earlier if th* presence of North Island buyers is to be eecurea. Another point that should be considered is that if the fair is betid earlier ifc will enable breedere who have failed to sell here to enter their name, say, for the Palmerston North and Masterton Fair*, -which they could not do thie year. The question of the date of the early fair will no dioubt be brought up at the annual meeting of the Canterbury A. and P. Association next month, and if it is decided to try the experiment again next year a more suitable time can then be arranged. »
